Fresh Start - a lifestyle balance program is an evidence based, patient centered behaviour change program to help prevent type 2 diabetes (58% risk reduction) and lower the risk for heart disease (41% risk reduction in patients with metabolic syndrome). Source: Diabetes risk reduction in primary care: Evaluation of the Ontario Primary Care Diabetes Prevention Program, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care, 2015 

Participants of the Fresh Start program will:

  • Learn about healthy eating, meal planning, mindful eating, eating away from home and more.
  • Learn to slowly and safely increase physical activity with guidance and support.
  • Learn strategies and tools for planning, problem solving and staying motivated. 

Participant eligibility is as follows:

  • Must be over 18 years of age.
  • Must have a body mass index greater or equal to 25 kg/m2 (overweight or obese). *
  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Must not have an eating disorder, bariatric surgery, or have a medical condition where weight loss would interfere with the management.

*Individuals with BMI below 25 kg/m2 that may present other important risk factors for type 2 diabetes, such as direct family history, member of a high-risk group, health complications associated with diabetes, existing metabolic syndrome conditions may participate in program.


Participants will meet weekly for the first 3 month (core phase) at the Timiskaming Health Unit for 1 hour, followed by bi-weekly meetings for 3 months.

The goals for the participants of the Fresh Start program are to: 

1.      Achieve and maintain a weight loss of 5- 7% of their initial body weight

2.      Achieve and maintain 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week
