Timiskaming Road Safety Coalition

Goal of the TRSC

Since its inception in 1997, the goal of the Timiskaming Road Safety Coalition (TRSC ) has been to promote and improve ROAD SAFETY, and SAFE DRIVING practices in South Timiskaming.

For this purpose, the TRSC has been involved in Road Safety Challenge Week, an initiative of the Province of Ontario, every year since 1998.  In so doing, this group consisting of individuals, corporate and agency representatives committed to the above stated goal has earned 4 consecutive awards for the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and an honourable mention in 2002, an unprecedented accomplishment.

TRSC History

image001.jpg (109288 bytes)The TRSC was established as a result of the investigative effort of an Injury Prevention Committee, a working group of the Timiskaming Health Unit.

Originally named the Timiskaming Road Safety committee, the group identified road safety as a priority issue in Timiskaming and recommended a comprehensive study of the major issues.

During 1997 information was collected and community input was sought by the TRSC. The result was the identification of six road safety issues:

  • Truck Safety
  • Speeding
  • Driving Habits
  • Infant/Child Restraints
  • Adolescent Population
  • Motorized Scooters

image002.jpg (252215 bytes)Solutions targeting the issues are outlined in a report.  Recommendations for action and target source at which they were aimed were also identified.

Since becoming a working coalition in 1998, the TRSC has been involved throughout the year in many public awareness and safety initiatives.  Activities to date have included displays throughout the district, seat belt checks, road rallies, the RIDE program, a police “warning ticket” to alert parents of youth not wearing proper bicycling gear, Snowmobile Skills Challenge, a poster and placemat campaign designed to draw awareness to the proper use of turning lanes (see above), Report Impaired and Aggressive Driving, No Zone, Heroes, Child Restraint Inspection Clinics, Kid's Safety Day - 2004 and annual involvement in the Road Safety Challenge Week.

The TRSC consists of a minimum of 5 volunteer members, a maximum of 15.  Presently, these individuals represent the Ministry of Transportation, the Timiskaming Health Unit,  Temiskaming Detachment of the OPP, Temiskaming Shores Police Service, 5th Wheel Training Institute, Temiskaming Shores Fire Department, Temiskaming Speaker, MADD, Timiskaming District Secondary School, District School Board Ontario Northeast, City of Temiskaming Shores and the Ontario Early Years Center.
