Smart Serve

For over 15 years, Smart Serve has taken a leading role in promoting the responsible sale and service of alcohol through education, training and certification.

Smart Serve is the only responsible alcohol beverage service training program recognized by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). It teaches staff to recognize the signs of intoxication and how to slow service to those who are reaching their limit.

In Ontario, if you serve or handle alcohol in a licensed establishment you must be Smart Serve certified. As a server or a provider of alcohol, you are legally responsible for the safety and sobriety of all your customers and guests – sober or intoxicated. This can include the following staff: owners, managers, servers, bartenders, door staff, security, and golf course marshals. This requirement applies to full-time, part-time, contract, and seasonal employees.

Having staff trained in Smart Serve lowers liability risks - a well-trained staff, fully aware of the effects of alcohol and the techniques for dealing with intoxicated patrons, is the best way to avoid trouble.
