Timiskaming Local Food Map

Welcome to the Timiskaming Local Food Map!

Timiskaming Local Food Map helps people find out where to eat and buy food made in Timiskaming. It makes access to healthy local food, grown and produced in the Timiskaming District easy.

This map is a shared project of Timiskaming Health Unit and local food producers, restaurants, caterers, and stores that show a commitment to sourcing and selling local products when in season, such as fresh produce and livestock, or using recipes that contain locally produced products as the first or main ingredient.

How We Define "Local Food"?

For this map, we are defining "Local Food" as food produced within Timiskaming District, including Temagami.

Why Buy Local?

  • Food produced locally does not have to travel for a long distance to reach people. Less time from farm to fork reduces the impact on the environment.
  • Eating local supports local farmers and their families.
  • Foods imported from further away are picked before they are ripe and are forced to ripen during shipping. Vegetables and fruits that ripen naturally have a better taste, are fresher, and more nutritious. This also applies to local vegetables and fruits that are frozen at the peak of freshness, to keep their nutritional value and taste.

Tips on How to Eat More Local?

  • Check or ask where food comes from at the grocery store, restaurants, farmers markets, events, and meetings.
  • Look on labels for "Product of Timiskaming" and/or the farm name.
  • Ask where the food was grown to learn about the source and origin of your food.
  • Stock up foods when they are in season and at a good price, like strawberries in summer and root vegetables in winter. This helps make the local food system stronger and more sustainable.

Food security and food banks for Timiskaming communities

The situation we are facing with COVID-19 is unique. Understandably, the response can be overwhelming, and, at times, it may be hard to know what to do to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Measures to protect our population from COVID-19 include making sure people are ready in case the illness spreads largely in our communities.

To help guide our decisions around purchasing and to ensure there is enough food for all in our communities, we have provided some recommendations. This includes information about available local food bank services.
