About the COVID-19 Community Support Collaborative
The COVID-19 Community Support Table is made up of representatives from a broad group of agencies spanning the District of Timiskaming. Facilitated by the Timiskaming Health Unit, the table convenes regularly to support vulnerable residents in Timiskaming during this COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose is to:
- help local agencies to support vulnerable and at-risk populations in identifying and responding to emerging needs
- support coordination, information sharing, problem solving, and collaboration among community partners

- Doors remain open to women and their children in unsafe situations and in need of emergency services. If you need assistance, please call the shelter.

- If any member of the public or professional have a concern about the safety and/or well-being of a child or youth under 18, they should immediately contact North Eastern Ontario Family and Children’s Services (NEOFACS) - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 1-866-229-5437 (Toll-Free) in Timiskaming District.
Assaulted Women’s Helpline (call: 1-866-863-0511)
- 24-hour telephone and TTY crisis line to all woman who have experienced abuse including: counselling, emotional support, information and referrals.
Victim Services Temiskaming and District (call: 705.647.0096 email: email@example.com)
- Non-profit, community based program that provides immediate, short-term crisis assistance through both staff and specially trained community volunteers. Works in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police and other Emergency Services to provide assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Professional staff and volunteer crisis support workers provide emotional support, practical assistance, and important information about available services in the community

Closing the Digital Divide in Timiskaming
There is a digital divide in the District of Timiskaming: a discrepancy between those who have access to information and communication technologies and the benefits they provide and those who don't. This divide can be the result of many factors including high costs for technology and online access and limited Internet connectivity in rural Northern Ontario. An evidence brief was put together by Timiskaming Health Unit staff highlighting not only the problem, but potential solutions based on a scan.
Thanks to funding from DTSAAB, United Way and Temiskaming Foundation, and partnership with CMHA, THU and various local community partners, will be launching the Closing the Digital Divide pilot project on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. This initiative will make technology more accessible for people who experience barriers to accessing digital technology (e.g. financial hardship) in our district.
The Closing the Digital Divide Project aims to address inequity through the provision of technology and Internet to families living with low income, individuals and seniors who experience barriers, as identified through our partnering agencies. Those who are selected to participate in the program through our health and social service partners will receive a device (smartphone, cellular tablet or laptop) and a cellular data package for a predetermined number of months.
Social service and health partners involved in the pilot signed a Memorandum of Understanding between their organization and CMHA/Timiskaming Health Unit and submitted the Client Request/Registration Form with eligible clients. Please note, the deadline has passed to submit applications for this project.
Please refer to the Wave Model & Timelines document to be aware of timelines for the project, including when Wave 1 of the project comes to and end (October 30th). This page also highlights how the project flows between partners and the eligibility criteria to consider when thinking about which clients you’d like to refer to the program.
Recipients of the program will receive technology tips, tools and resources including digital skill building opportunities and local supports and learning options.

Here are some mental health tips to cope with stress during the COVID-19
- Practicing social (physical) distancing doesn’t mean to disconnect. Connect virtually with friends and family, use email, phone, or your preferred social media platforms to connect.
- While staying at home as much as possible, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating, sleep, and exercise.
- Avoid using substances to deal with your emotions. If you are feeling overwhelmed talk to a health worker or counsellor.
- Get your information from reliable sources, and limit the amount of time you spend watching or listening to media coverage.
- Use the skills you have used in the past that have helped you manage life’s challenges.

Are smokers and tobacco users at higher risk of COVID-19 infection?
Smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 as the act of
smoking means that fingers (and possibly contaminated cigarettes) are in
contact with lips which increases the possibility of transmission of
virus from hand to mouth. Smokers may also already have lung disease or
reduced lung capacity which would greatly increase risk of serious

mouth pieces and hoses, which could facilitate the transmission of
COVID-19 in communal and social settings.
Conditions that increase oxygen needs or reduce the ability of the
