Many children don’t see a dentist until the age of three or later. However, the Canadian Dental Association recommends the assessment of infants, by a dental professional, within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or by one year of age. To help bridge the gap, the dental team offers dental screenings as well as fluoride varnish applications twice per school year to all children in licensed daycares and Early ON centers in our area.

What is the purpose of this program?

  • To ensure children are seen at a young age to detect issues early on. This allows the issue to be monitored or treated before it becomes a problem.
  • To prevent tooth decay, slow it down or stop it from getting worse by applying fluoride varnish.
  • To help children to get comfortable with dental visits in a familiar setting.

How does the program work?

  • A consent form will be distributed by your daycare. Only children with a completed consent form will be seen.
  • Guidelines of infection prevention control set out by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario and by Infection Prevention and Control Canada are met. And only a mirror is used for the screening.
  • A report card indicating services completed and any findings noted will be sent home along with a goodie bag.
  • If your child is identified with an urgent dental condition, follow-up must be completed by a dentist.
  • If treatment would cause a financial hardship, you can apply for Health Smiles Ontario. Click here for more details
